Comedian Rajeev Nigam, who performed in Lucknow on Saturday (January 31), says that he is not a fan of incorporating foul language into his acts. He further says that those who do it have a different target audience.
In an exclusive interview with Roktim Rajpal Diaries, Nigam also opens up about his journey and dealing with threats.
Edited excerpts from the interview:
How was the experience of performing in Lucknow?
It was a very good experience. The content was received well by the audience. Sometimes there are situations when the audience is not receptive to the presentation. This, however, was not the case here.
How did your journey as a comedian begin?
I used to do small skits when I was studying and people reacted to it. I enjoyed the whole experience/process and this turned into a driving force. It has been a long journey since. I have seen the various phases of the industry. I have also performed worldwide and written for TV. In fact, I have done all forms of comedy.
Your comedy is quite hard hitting. Have you ever received threats? How did you deal with them?
This show was to initially happen at the Sangeet Natak Academy. However, it was cancelled. This too was a threat. I also receive threats on social media.

I am an honest person and love my country. That is the strength that helps me deal with theareats. I also derive strength from the laughter of the people who enjoy my shows.
How has your approach to comedy changed over the years?
Basically, society provides content. It has evolved over time. So, my content too has evolved with time. That way, there are multiple challenges in my field.
What is the biggest challenge you face in this line of work?
Thodi pareshani toh rehte hai if we don’t get the right type of audience. We have to read the situation and adjust accordingly. We also need to rely on our purana khazana (old bag of tricks)
Some comics use strong language as part of their work. What is your take on this?
It is just a trend. Collegegoers do such comedy, and it is a part of their lingo. They have a different target audience. As far as I am concerned, abuses and all are not part of my basic nature.
What is your advice for aspiring comedians?
The next generation does not need any advice. The new comics are good and belong to an advanced generation. They have their target audience.
How do you deal with setbacks?
Pehle pareshaan hota tha. However, over time, I have realised that it is a part of life. You need to handle things coolly and keep preparing. Time will change for the good.
