Dr Rishad Rizvi is a popular actor based in Lucknow, An alumnus of La Martiniere College, he has carved a niche for himself with his work in films like Ladies Vs Ricky and the Tanu Weds Manu franchise.
Rizvi also appeared in the show Tod Ke Dil Mera. Speaking exclusively to Roktim Rajpal Diaries, he opens up about his association with theatre and his biggest professional regret.
How did your tryst with theatre begin?
I would act in plays on stage in school and enjoy that experience. This journey actually started when we were doing a play and the guy playing a wolf fell ill. I was then cast in that role.

Later, in senior school, I won the MGM for theatre in English and Hindi. The theatre setup was like an education system in its own right. We learnt makeup and all.
How did films happen?
A friend of mine Iqbal Kidwai was handling production work on a project. He called me on the set of a film to treat the director as he was unwell. He asked me to handle local production activities. Later, some acting offers came my way. One of them was Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl. I played Ranveer Singh’s Father in Law in it. Then there was Tanu Weds Manu where I played Jimmy Sheirgill’s father.
How do you prepare for film roles?
As far as films are concerned, I ask for the script in advance to prepare for my part. I then do a lot of rehearsals to get into the skin of the character. However, close up shots are a challenge and one needs to be careful while shooting the same.
You were seen in the web show Tod Ke Dil Mera.
Yes, that was an experience. The challenge with OTT productions is that there is virtually no time to prepare. You have to go with the flow.
Can theatre be a viable career in Lucknow?
There is no money in theatre. Ab sponsors aa rahe hain. However, you still can’t take it as a career.
How can this problem be solved?
The only way out is for corporates to step in and start patronising theatre groups. This will make it somewhat financially viable.
Do you have any professional regrets?
I went to medical school at a crucial point in my life. I had gotten into NSD and was ready to pursue acting and direction. However, due to my family’s wishes, I decided to drop out and pursue a career in medicine. In hindsight, I wish I hadn’t done that. I wish I had pursued acting and direction instead.
