Gunjan Jain is a seasoned actor from Lucknow who has made a strong impact in theatre with her work in plays such as Chambal Ek Nadi Ka Naam, A Night with Marilyn Monroe, and Gaon Mein Kuch Bura Hone Wala Hai.

Additionally, she has acted in films such as Mission Majnu and The Vaccine War. In an exclusive interview with Roktim Rajpal Diaries, Gunjan opens up about the need for ticketed theatre in Lucknow and her professional journey.

Edited excerpts from the interview:

How did you get drawn towards theatre?

It was a gradual process. I used to do plays in school. However, I eventually got married, and family took the front seat. Years later, when my daughter was leaving for college, she asked me to resume acting.

I then attended (acting coach) Prasanna sir’s workshop. Then a play came my way before Covid. In it, I would essay three roles. The play was Ek Rumaal Ek Anguthi Ek Chalni. I eventually did it, and it became a stepping stone.

How did films happen?

I had signed Zindagi 1 TSP, a short film, before the pandemic. Later, I gathered the energy to say yes to it. It was a beautiful project.

Did your theatre background come in handy when you transitioned to films?

It did come in handy. It helps one focus on the script. I have often seen some people from a non-theatre background are casual in this regard. Woh sirf apni hi dialogue ratte hai. We read the whole scene.

What is your biggest takeaway from theatre?

A lot of characters can be done through body language and voice modulation. I was into music right from a young age. Handling the rhythm was not hard. However, theatre taught me how to strike a balance between acting and singing. Moreover, in theatre you get instant reactions for your work.

You started your career late. Any regrets on that account?

I am happy with whatever comes my way. I have turned down roles too, as I don’t want to be part of a project just for the sake of it.

How can one improve the state of theatre in Lucknow?

Ticketed shows are the need of the hour. An actor is not there to perform for free. Everyone should be paid. People are running away from theatre as there is no money involved. Book My Show has made a difference in this regard. We are also doing our bit to give a boost to the theatre scene. In March, we are organising Natya Nirvana. It is a theatre festival It will feature plays from various groups.
