Actor Tulika Banerjee, best known for her role in Aashram, says that those keen to pursue a career in the entertainment industry need to have a backup. She feels that there is merely a 10% chance of success in this line of work. In an exclusive interview with Roktim Rajpal Diaries, Tulika also opens up about how her family has always had her back during her professional journey.
(Edited excerpts from the interview)
What made you pursue acting as a career?
I never thought about pursuing acting as a career. There are two types of people in this world. The first lot follows a plan, while the second type just goes with the flow. I am a person who belongs to the second category. I have never planned anything in life. Things just happened, and I eventually got Mr Kabbadi.
How did Aashram happen?
Usually, big production houses offer you small roles and vice versa. As far as Aashram goes, I salute Mr Prakash Jha. He personally called all artists for the selection process, and that is how I got the role.

Were you nervous about working with Bobby Deol?
I have never been nervous in my life. Performing on stage is my fuel.
Ashram had plenty of bold scenes. What is your take on it?
I was not part of such scenes. However, generally speaking, big production houses shoot bold scenes in an ethical manner, and that makes a difference.
What is your family’s reaction to your career?
My parents were always supportive. Moreover, my husband is very understanding. He even takes care of the cooking. We, frankly speaking, are not affected by what others say or think about us.
Any regrets about not being based in Mumbai?
I don’t think it had any effect. I always wanted to be rooted to my kids. Maine kabhi socha hi nahi tha jki badi heroine banna hain. As such, there is no running after projects.
Do you have a dream role?
I started after 35. As a result, most of the roles offered to me were the ‘hero ki maa’ type. Come to think of it. I want to do a mature love story
What advice would you want to give to those keen to pursue acting as a career?
The first advice is to keep a backup. This is an uncertain profession. There is only a 10% chance of success. Yahaan bahut failure hai. Also, don't take me as an example. I have been lucky.
